Two sessions were planned for Sh*tties today, to catch this reef break at
its best - mid-tide. We were a bit late for the morning session with the
tide flooding out and it was not clear what to rig. Most opted for 5.3
which turned out to be a tad large for me. The reef was pretty much exposed
anyway so after a couple of freeride runs in the bay I decided to save some
energy for the afternoon session.
With the tide flooding in again the wind had picked up. Rigged 4.7 and 4.2
to give a range of options, but the reports from the beach were that it had
picked up more so I derigged the 4.7 and rigged 3.7. All this wasted
valuable time and the reef was starting to flood out when I hit the water.
In fact I was a little underowered on 3.7 and 69 litres and drifted off
downwind to where the shorebreak was building. Borrowed Jem's HC Wave 75
and this kept upwind OK. There was a huge amount of water moving around and
I was drained so called it a day after a few runs before anything went
wrong.
Moral - stick with what you have rigged and get out while the conditions
are good. Still 4 stars though - awesome conditions in an awesome location.
The waves peel consistently if you get there at the right state of tide and
it is easy to get out past the breaking waves.
